Learn the art of elegant table setting with our expert guide. Discover essential tips for arranging plates, flatware, glassware, and napkins to create the perfect table for any occasion. Ideal for both novice and seasoned hosts looking to elevate their dining experience

Welcome to 'The Art of Celebrating' with Akeshi Akinseye, where elegance meets tradition. Today, we're diving into the art of table setting—a fundamental aspect of hosting that combines aesthetics with functionality. Whether you're preparing for a luxurious gathering or an intimate dinner, setting the table properly is the first step in crafting an unforgettable dining experience. Let’s explore this process in detail, ensuring your table is as beautiful as it is functional.

The Foundation: Tablecloth: Start with a clean, pressed tablecloth as the foundation of your tablescape. This not only adds an element of sophistication but also protects your table. Choose a color and texture that complements the theme and mood of your gathering.

Plates Placement:

  • Layering Plates: If you're serving salad, place the salad plate on top of the dinner plate at the center of each setting. For soup courses, the soup bowl should go on the salad plate.

  • Bread Plates: Place the bread plate slightly above and to the left of the salad plate, near the dessert fork.

Flatware Placement:

  • Order of Use: Arrange cutlery in the order of use, from the outside working in. Forks go on the left side, while knives (with the cutting edge facing inward) and spoons go on the right.

  • Dessert Utensils: The dessert spoon and fork should be placed horizontally above the plate.

  • Bread and Butter Knife: If needed, it's placed on the bread plate.

Glassware Placement:

  • Right of the Plate: Glassware should be set above and to the right of the dinner plate.

  • Order of Glasses: From left to right, arrange the water glass, red wine glass, white wine glass, and champagne or cocktail glass.

Napkin Placement:

  • Elegantly Folded: Fold the napkin or use a napkin ring and place it in the middle of the setting or to the left of the forks or on the top plate, typically the salad or dinner plate.

Creating the Atmosphere:

Remember, the beauty of a table setting is in the details. It's not just about following rules; it's about creating an inviting and warm atmosphere for your guests. Choose centerpieces that enhance the setting without obstructing views, and consider ambient lighting to set the mood.

And there you have it—a table set to perfection. Whether it's a holiday dinner or a casual brunch, these guidelines will help you create an elegant and welcoming table for any occasion. Now, it's your turn to set the stage for a memorable meal.
